Brimstone

Parker's gunslinging saddle pals Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch return for their third adventure, in which the two lawmen-for-hire exchange snappy dialogue and hot lead with assorted owlhoots, deadbeats and unwashed baddies in south Texas. Here, Virgil and Everett rescue Allie French, Virgil's former sweetie who ran off to become a prostitute, and head to Brimstone, where the two gunmen sign on as deputy sheriffs. Brimstone, however, doesn't exactly provide a quiet respite for this trio. Virgil and Allie have a hard time getting over his hurt and her shame, a mysterious Indian is killing local folks and leaving taunting messages, and brutal saloon owner Pike and corrupt preacher Brother Percival are headed for a showdown. Virgil and Everett settle on a tricky solution that involves a talented tracker, a bribe, a double-cross, a noxious cloud of gun smoke and a pile of perforated bodies.

Here we see Pony Flores for the first time, working with Cole & Hitch. The half breed Mexican and Native American gunman will return in "Blue-eyed Devil".

We also run into Allie, Virgil's love interest. Here she's very devout and goes to church every day.

Here we also meet Laurel Ostermueller, a teenage girl who later marries Pony Flores.

"The Church of the Brotherhood" - I'm not sure on which sect or religion they are based on. It's probably an allusion to the mormon religion.

"We will prevail" - It's from the Bible, Psalm 12:4

"How you know I ain't godly," I said.

"Deacon Brown, like all of us here in the congregation, will do what he must," Percival said.

"It is God's work," Percival said.

"Hope so," Virgil said.

"When she ain't cleaning and sewing and fucking up my shirts, and cooking bad," Virgil said, "she's reading the Bible, or she's in church, or she's sashaying down to the saloons to save souls with Brother Percival."
